SEEDA Case Study 1

West Berkshire EBP – Travelling Schoolworks Exhibition

Towards the end of  2000, 12 primary schools across West Berkshire had access to the Travelling School Works Exhibition. The exhibition covered Light, Forces and Materials.

12 teachers attended the familiarisation sessions which were run at the EBP offices on two consecutive days for teachers to be fully briefed on the equipment. One teacher will be working with AWE to develop a follow up project. Some schools also opted for a presentation by an actor dressed up as Sir Issac Newton.

Pupil Recounts and Experiences

"I liked the atoms best, where you had to stack the balls into different shapes. It showed that it was easy to do the square, medium for the triangle and practically impossible for the circle, because it’s round."

"The square Pyramid was quite fun."

"The best thing I liked were the Bendy Mirrors. I liked them because they made you fat and thin, which was really funny. It made your face small and wide and your fingers really small. I thought it was superb."

"I think the best was the Skid Test because it looked very interesting and a lot of fun. I learnt that on the shiny surface it skidded a lot but on the other rough surface it did not slip as much as the shiny surface."

"I really enjoyed the light table. I liked that contrast of colours and seeing what colours they made."

"It's just like when my mum mixes cocktails."

Pressure - The effect of a force can depend on the area over which  it is applied. Various feet shapes are pushed into a foam rubber surface. The resistance of the foam rubber to shapes of different areas being pushed down can be felt.
