SEEDA Case Study 4
Windsor Slough EBP
Delights of Science Technology
Windsor Slough EBP worked on a project called the Delights of Science
& Technology which was sponsored by Nortel and also received funding
from the SEEDA fund for learning.
The aim was to introduce KS2 pupils in year 6 to the exciting world of
Science and Technology in a new way. By demonstrating how science and
technology is used in the real world, children may be encouraged to carry
that out in to a career. 10 Companies from the local area hosted their
own workshops, which ran for a duration of either half an hour or an hour.
Each pupil experiences 3 workshops over the course of the morning and
in total 636 pupils attended over the two days. Provisions were also made
for special needs pupils who were allocated workshops, which would be
accessible in terms of their ability level and most beneficial to them.
Summary
Overall the running of the Delights of Science and Technology project
has proved to be a huge success for all those involved. Organisations
running the workshops have commented that their involvement has helped
raise company profile in the local area. As well as being the ideal platform
for internal team building, whereby even senior personnel were involved
in workshops, participation gave companies an ideal opportunity to build
links with local schools.
This project offers pupils a fun filled day whilst at the same time an
opportunity for them to develop some of their curriculum and key skill
areas.
Mars Workshop

Shows a group of pupils learning about different 'states of matter' and
how this is used in the production industry. Chocolate tempering was carried
out in order to determine how critical temperature is in acheiving the
correct results.
Nortel Networks - The Canyon Workshop

Shows pupils participating in the Canyon Workshop, the objective being
to build a bridge up to the curtain so that when the curtain is lifted
the pupils bridges should meet.
